Since 2009, the Hovde Foundation has been supporting one of Ghana’s most fascinating figures, James Kofi Annan, in his efforts to eradicate slavery in his home country. Himself a former child slave in the Lake Volta fishing industry, James knows firsthand about the plight of children in bondage -- as well as the challenges that these children will face after they are liberated. Initially funded from his personal earnings, James’ founded one of the largest anti-trafficking organizations in West Africa and now educates, rescues, rehabilitates, and advocates for child slaves, as well as those at risk of being trafficked.

In 2012, Challenging Heights enrolled over 575 students at its K-7th school!
This organization also supports at-risk and struggling families to ensure that vulnerable children are protected from trafficking, and works to change the local culture and encouraging Ghanaian communities to reject child exploitation. James has proved that his organization works for the rights of the children they serve by securing the first ever conviction under the 2005 Anti-Trafficking Law.
