Three young survivors are the first to call it “home”. November 8, 2011. Winneba, Ghana--Less than three weeks ago, Hovde Foundation joined the Challenging Heights team for a planned rescue on Lake Volta. Three brothers (Kweko age 10, Kwesi age 8, and Ko age 6) were rescued from a small fishing community on Lake Volta after their mother reported the boys were taken from their home in the Central Region two years ago. In recent years, Challenging Heights had used a small shelter near Lake Volta (8 hours north of Accra) for the temporary housing of rescued children. The close proximity of the shelter to the rescue sites presented a growing risk for the children. With construction starting last year on a new shelter built by Hovde Foundation, this “Hovde House” officially opened its doors upon the arrival of these three brothers. This shelter is located in the Central Region of Ghana, much closer to Challenging Heights' school, north of Winneba. Today, there are more than 15 boys calling this Hovde House their home, with a total capacity for up to 60 children at one time. As the rescue missions continue to be supported by funds through Free the Slaves, the Hovde House will now be the first point of refuge for liberated children, offering a transitional shelter for each child to receive holistic rehabilitation, survivor support, aftercare, and love!
