The Hovde Foundation Donates New Vehicle to “Meals on Wheels” Program in Madison, WI

Hovde Foundation provides new vehicle for Madison nonprofit‘s award-winning program, distributing hot, nutritional meals to low income seniors.

Dec. 6, 2011. Madison, Wisconsin —Independent Living, Inc. will take ownership this month of their new 2012 Subaru Forester as a result of the $24,000 grant received from the Hovde Foundation. Independent Living, Inc. is a nonprofit organization in Madison that supports low-income and disabled senior adults with independent living assistance, in-home health care, homelessness prevention, and Meals on Wheels.  This new vehicle will be essential for continuing the Evening Meals on Wheels program. One of very few organizations to in the USA with the Magnet Accreditation from the Meals on Wheels Association of America, Independent Living mobilizes over 300 volunteers each year to bring hot, healthy meals to nearly 45,000 people throughout Dane County, Wisconsin.

The Meals on Wheels program was facing operational cutbacks in 2012 due to vehicle constraints, however with this gift, the program is hopeful to continue for many years. A 2012 Subaru Forester was selected as the most appropriate vehicle, not only given its physical qualities but also due to Subaru of America, Inc’s partnership with the Meals on Wheels Membership Association, which provided a significant discount off the purchase price.   Subaru also contributed $250 through its Share the Love Campaign.

Eric Hovde presented the shiny, blue car to the surprised staff of Independent Living, Inc. on December 21 and expressed his delight for this new partnership: “For 40 years, Independent Living has been meeting the needs of Madison’s vulnerable senior adults.  Countless volunteers and donations of food help fuel the Meals on Wheels program.  I am thrilled that this new car will allow them to continue the program for years to come!”

The CEO of Independent Living, Inc. added:  "The gift from the Hovde Foundation could not have come at a better time - not just because of the holidays, but it is essential to continuing our Evening Meals on Wheels program operation. We're taking a 1997 vehicle with close to 100,000 miles out of service and replacing it with this much more reliable and efficient 2012 Subaru Forester."

The donation was made through The Eric D. and Steven D. Hovde Foundation, created in 1998 to assist neglected, abused, and vulnerable children, and to fund research towards a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. The foundation is best known for its “Hovde Houses” which provide transitional housing and supportive services to vulnerable children, both abroad and at home.  The Hovde House in Madison, WI is run by local partner The Road Home Dane County.
